An Origin Story
Long ago (well, the 1920s), in a smoky Paris bar called Harry’s New York Bar, a bartender named Fernand “Pete” Petiot was experimenting. He mixed vodka with tomato juice — a combination that sounds like a dare someone lost — and handed it to a customer.
The customer took a sip and said something like, “This reminds me of a girl named Mary… from a bar in Chicago… called the Bucket of Blood.”Petiot shrugged, said “Sure, why not,” and the name stuck.When Petiot later moved to the St. Regis Hotel in New York, he upgraded the drink with spices, Worcestershire sauce, lemon, and all the drama we now know and love.
