Whiskey Wednesday - Single malts from around the world!

Many scotch enthusiasts may discover that they're well into their journey of appreciation before they ever actually learn what the phrase "single malt" even means. To be considered a single malt scotch, the whisky must be distilled from a mash bill of 100 percent malted barley at one distillery and aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks. Distillers are then allowed to get as creative as they’d like, from experimenting with the number of distillations to using a variety of cask finishes.

Single malt Irish whiskey represents a treasured category within the world of spirits, esteemed for its smooth, often fruit-forward profile and the intricate craft required in its production. Despite being overshadowed by its Scottish counterpart and the popular blended Irish whiskeys, single malts from Ireland have a dedicated following and a history that contributes richly to the tapestry of whiskey-making.

Japanese whisky brands like Yamazaki and Hibiki have picked up in consumer popularity recently, and now it seems Taiwan is following suit. Kavalan Distillery stands alone as Taiwan’s first and only whisky distillery. Their first round of bottling was released in 2008, and since then they’ve picked up numerous awards–and a few controversies.

KAVALAN SINGLE MALT WHISKY NO.1 DISTILLERY SELECT 86

Remarkably constructed in only 9 months in 2015, the Kavalan distillery is Taiwan's first whisky distillery. Despite their relative youth, the malt whiskies made at Kavalan are amazingly flavorful, complex, world-class spirits—modeled after Scottish single malts—that are a product of ingenuity, Scottish tradition and ingredients, and the unique tropical Taiwanese climate that accelerates the aging process.

DINGLE SINGLE MALT IRISH WHISKEY 92.6

Dingle Single Malt is mainly six to seven year old spirit which has been matured in PX Sherry and Bourbon first-fill casks. Interestingly, Dingle are one of only a few Irish distillers that do not buy or sell to other distilleries, producing solely their own spirit.

This expression from Dingle has been designed to be versatile. The fact that it can be enjoyed just as much as a base for high-end cocktails as it can neat over ice means that it should appeal to a fairly wide audience.

BALBLAIR SINGLE MALT SCOTCH 12 YR 92

In early 2019, Balblair's core range received a relaunch, eschewing the vintages that had previously adorned the bottles in favor of age statements! This is the entry level expression of the range, a 12 year old single malt matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and double-fired American oak casks. Though the vintages are gone, Balblair's whisky retains its marvelous creaminess and fruit-forward flavor profile.
