Weekday wine - Revolution Malbec

2021 Revolution Malbec

Mendoza, Argentina

Usual price: $14 per bottle

Sale price: $11 per bottle

History is of little consequence to most wine drinkers, which is as it should be. Does it really matter that Zinfandel is not really ‘America’s heritage grape’, but rather, that it originated in Croatia? What’s important is that the wine tastes good and the price tag makes sense.

Which brings me to Malbec…a grape that likely originated in eastern France but has found its best-known expressions in Argentina. The grape arrived in Argentina in 1868, and has been wildly successful there while declining in planted acreage nearly everywhere else in the world. It’s no wonder that the wine world largely considers Malbec to be of Argentine provenance.

This Malbec, from the Revolution Wine Company, is a delight. It’s very much a ‘Mama bear’ wine (from Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Nevermind), as it's just right. Full bodied with upfront berry flavors and hints of dark chocolate, it nonetheless exhibits a soft and smooth finish that makes it an easy wine to enjoy under all circumstances. Friendly and inexpensive, it's revolutionary in its almost universal appeal. (PW)
